Orange County, established in 1734, prospered with the development of several railroad routes in the 1840s and 1850s. The Orange and Alexandria Railroad and Virginia Central Railroad helped foster a diversified agricultural economy, bringing produce and timber to markets in the both north and south as well as more industrial products.
