Located on the Virginia Peninsula, York County is bordered by the York River, the Chesapeake Bay and the neighboring municipalities of James City County, Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, and Poquoson. Seaford is a neighborhood situated on the banks of the York River and is known for its waterfront views and access to recreational activities such as boating and fishing.

The northwestern end of the county is considered part of the greater Williamsburg area, with rural and suburban properties adjacent to the City of Williamsburg and James City County.
